It is not easy picking up a cat particularly an older one with little prior human contact. Apparently, when picked up suddenly the cat loses its sense of balance and panics. As an intermediate step try to get cat to jump voluntarily up on your lap using its favorite food. Once it gets used to that pull it close to your body and hug it.
