Cat breeders are an experimental lot, creating distinctive new breeds either by building on natural genetic mutations or by crossing breeds to achieve a new look, color or pattern. The Bombay, named for the exotic port city of India, has no connection with the subcontinent but was created from crosses between sable Burmese and black American Shorthairs to resemble a black panther in miniature.
Breeder Nikki Horner of Louisville, Kentucky, is credited with developing the Bombay, starting in the late 1950s. Her goal was a sleek, shiny black cat with a muscular body and friendly temperament. British breeders achieved the same look and personality with crosses of Burmese and black domestic shorthairs.

We just found one,, about 4 -5 months old we think,, so loveable,, but our 2 yr old cat does't care right now growls like crazy,, our 18 and 17 yr olds don't care so far.. well we shall see what happens…
The perfect cat. Loving, good-natured and intelligent. Ours immediately befriended our Boxer despite her spastic and enthusiastic nature. I cannot stress enough just how loving our Bombay is, always in my lap or by my side. She loves sleeping on top of the Boxer 🙂

I have a Bombay cat. I love him so much he's my little angel. Don't laugh… But his name is Kannye he recently got sick with URI. But he's getting better now.
Bombay's are known for their over talkative behavior. I don't know where she is getting her info from. Any owner of a Bombay will most assuredly tell you that they 'talk' all day. Mine, Panther, has his own vocabulary. He uses the exact same, but distinctive sounds for certain particular things, all the time. He loves people and will run up and talk to anyone who comes into the house. Loves to play fetch, and I often find him sitting inside the cupboard. Scares the heck out of me when I open it. They are a joy, very 'crazy' active as kittens, but its been a fantastic 4 yrs with him!
every black cat is a "bombay" these days, or i guess thats just what dummies on the internet say! i have a black cat but i'm not an idiot so hes just a black american shorthair like 99% of the other black cats out there
I had a black domestic short hair for 17 years. She was sweet, but never a lap cat and not that sociable. But the other day, a young black cat/kitten showed up at our door, who we’ve now adopted. He’s like no other cat I’ve ever known. He follows me around, already knows his name, has amber/gold eyes, is very affectionate, intelligent and a great lap cat. And a mouser too! He doesn’t chase birds, which is good cuz we love our backyard birds, but he does chase rodents (squirrels and chipmunks). He has a touch of reddish brown mixed in with his hair on his upper legs and backside, but pure shiny black everywhere else. I don’t know if he’s a Bombay, but he fits the description!

of love that is unconditional. Mine is pretty vocal, it sounds weird but it’s almost like we have our own language. It’s a connection unlike any other!

You forgot to mention the bombay have poison in their claws, if it scratches you the scratch will swell up and itch, but it goes away in a matter of minutes, my bombay likes to hit me with her paws when she wants to play but i notice she always has her claws in when she does it, pretty intelligent cat.
I had a Bombay cat , it lived 14 years with me and dead , I was very sad , last week I have a new Bombay cat with golden eyes , I am very happy with them

The most increíble parker I' ve ever had. Funny, lovely, beautiful, elegant, quiet… I feel fortunate of having a Bombay in my life. No words about all that wonderful cat gives to me anda my family every day of our lives.

Why do you call stray cats purebred?
Your cats are beautiful that the breeders have produced so no offense intended. But mother nature has done it even better here in n.y. for me. She apparently has cross bred,ferrals,barn cats,strays including jet black high gloss america short hairs with lynx & bobcat again. Yes she has always done it & this 56 yr old farmer,hunter & trapper wont even argue about that with anyone. I suggest to anyone who doesnt believe to try to touch one of them or its kittens in the barn hay loft. I'm sure you will come away with a totally different perspective on the subject. I have 2 male kittens of 8.5 months that have decided to adopt me. As far as the beautiful black panther, cougar or puma look of a Bombay goes, the highest quality show Bombays that they use in photos & videos on web sites,dont hardly come close to these malanistic ones nature has given me. Yes they come in all color combos & tail length & sizes.To me,these I have are actually wild,longer tailed pixie Bombays. There are small ones around too,especially females. But these 2 I speak of are still kittens at 8.5 months & the smallest is 12+lbs,14/15" tall at the front shoulder standing comfortably on all 4 feet. 28" from his nose to his ass with no tail included as all. We have built trust ,but he is still atleast half wild & he does enjoy nightly visits inside my house & sleeping sprawled across my stomach & chest in my easy chair & purring relentlessly. The other larger brother is less trusting as of yet & not touchable but will enter the home & walk around so not possible to get any measurements yet,but he is easily 15/16 lbs or more, remember it's an 8.5 month old kitten. The father was about 2 yrs old,another wild longer tailed pixie bob that looked nothing like these 2 sons & was of near 30lbs himself. Feet bigger than silver dollars. When I say black panther or cougar looking you could not believe or conceive without photos.
