Cats 101: Manx

the manx the banks may look a lot like many felines we know and love but something’s missing it doesn’t have a tail it’s naturally default I love the legends that surround how the mags came to be how they lost their tail in the first place one claims that noise to blame they were the last animal on the ark and Noah’s Land The Arc door shut and cut off the tail actually the manx originated off the coast of Great Britain about 300 years ago the max cat comes from the Isle of Man otherwise known as manx Banks is still a huge part of the Isle of man’s population and they’ve adopted the Manx cat as a symbol of its native Origins and they’re now on postage stamps so they’re pretty famous cats the Manx cat has a naturally occurring mutation of the spine short is the tail but not all manks are tailless there are actually Four varieties of names the max without any tail is called a rumpy and has no tail vertebrae whatsoever there’s the Riser which is just a little bit of cartilage at the end of the spine there’s the Stumpy and then there’s the long which is the type of tail you would see on a typical cat if you breed two ruffies together the gene that removes the tail can affect the spine so tail Banks play a vital role in maintaining healthy offspring while the average cat has up to 20 vertebrae in the tail a Manx cat with say a Stumpy tail has just one to three vertebrae foreign despite not having a tale the manx has incredible balance and jumping ability both back legs those big strong back legs that they’ve developed because of the natural absence of the tail these strong hide legs are longer than four legs giving them a bunny hop cake it also creates a continuous Arch from shoulders to rough giving the max a rounded appearance they have very round little faces round eyes and those cheeks are very round the manks may be short on tail but they’re long on personality makes cats are almost dog-like just like kinky Max cats tend to be friendly affectionate and make great family pets the Manx cat is generally a very sturdy hearty cat sometimes they will develop a condition called the manx syndrome which means that unfortunately the cat’s spine doesn’t develop properly and those cats often don’t survive past four months old whether they’re short-haired or long-haired the Max has a dense double layered coat so they require regular combing about two to three times a week so in general the mags cat is very healthy but may be born with manx syndrome they should be brushed about twice a week and make good pets for all ages

When I was a kid, my mother had a Manx. Her name was Bobby and she was the sweetest cat we've ever had. Never attacked any of us and when my dad had to drain an infection she had, she only meowed in pain, didn't attack him. She was also a cat that thought she was a Mountain Lion. She had several litters and I miss her to this day.

My Manx is a "stumpy", and looks like a rabbit with a cat head! He's a light blonde tabby, and unlike most breed descriptions, is VERY talkative. Best cat I've ever met! SO lovable, and never hides, is leader of the house, a caring ruling over my maltese. IF you want a cat that adores you, is silly as can be, and isn't pretentious, get a Manx!

I've got a longy, and she's as fat as a cow

My stumpy manx, Lola got outside one night before being fixed, and she got preggers by another cat without a tail… but her kid, Dudley has an abnormally long tail…

I have a male Manx named Stewie, and he is really fluffy, and it makes him look fat. And he is a very high jumper, we brought home a spotted shorthair kitten named Miffy, and she is very hyper and Stewie doesn't like her. So every time he sees her, he growls and hisses, and sometimes he even grumbles. He even runs away from her, which is hilarious!

@obliterateu 2014-09-07 - 8:57 PM

My cat also sits like a human ( it looks like it ) it makes us laugh every time! He's also a big sweetheart around woman,nut he HATES babies, every time my little baby cousin Avery pokes him, Stewie just runs off into my mothers room.

I have a Manx named moonie and he is over fifteen years old.

@QhaZomb 2015-08-17 - 10:54 PM

manx syndrome really sucks. i had a manx cat that we'd rescued after she was abandoned most likely due to her prolapsed rectum, and she recently this year passed away due to a form of cancer that can happen in cats with manx syndrome :c

@mromeyn 2015-11-07 - 7:13 PM

@Qha Zomb My condolences, I lost my first Manx, KittyMann, 23 yrs. ago at 20 yrs. old, he was a longy and if I close my eyes I can still feel him snuggling behind my knees. My second Manx was a feral Cymric rumpy, Mr. Malarkey, and we shared each other's lives for over 18yrs. He passed away 2 yrs. ago and my heart still breaks/aches for him. My new family edition is also a Manx, a rumpy riser, Kismet, and he has helped to bring back some joy in my life. He is my profile picture. I have lived with Manx cats in my life for over 40 years now and could never live without one!
I am extremely sorry for your loss 🙁

My aunt has a Manx cat name Berque he's very affectionate and love to be petted and every time you called his name he would turn and come to you, so yeah I would say that Manx cats are like dogs.

My 8 year old manx riser, Cary Grant, fits all of this to a T. Big round cheek bones, bobbed bunny tail, thumping long legs in the back, sweetest most gregarious disposition you can wish of a cat. Found him shaved due to mats, ears torn, only recently fixed, rotten teeth, infected ears, at the pound. Love my fluffy little punkin-head. He loves kittens, and head scratches, and cookies, and best of all, when he hears me get into bed at night. He's there in a shot to rest his head on my shoulder and get his massage.

I have a brown and black stumpy!! she is the sweetest thing in the world.

@alexschmidt2895 2016-05-07 - 4:53 PM

I have a bob tail cat named tiny tina but shes acutually very stocky we think its because of inbreeding because her tail is stubby tail with a split at the end we think that im thinking my mama cat at the time mated with her son.

@lovejc63 2016-12-29 - 12:48 AM

I love my two manx furbabies. They are sweet, affectionate, and don't meow very much, and when they do, it sounds more like a squeak than a meow. I have a rumpie and a stumpie, and they are sisters from different litters.

My mom had a manx that could jump to the top of a door without an issue. She also was super jealous of any cats that had tails. She was a pretty cool cat.

@betsybarnicle8016 2022-02-27 - 5:04 PM

Then there's the short-tailed manx (has 1/3 to 1/2 the size of a normal cat tail). My cat's manx tail is in a club shape, not skinny, and it sticks straight up most of the time. She has the bunny shape and large back legs, wide hips.

When she was spayed, the vet had trouble finding her uterus. And I told him that it was a thing for manx cats to have a different arrangement of inner organs due to their difference in spine and tail.
